If you own a recent Google Pixel phone, your photos and videos are about to look even more stunning on Threads. The Meta-owned social app has quietly rolled out support for both Ultra HDR image sharing and 10-bit HDR video uploads, as first spotted by the eagle-eyed team at 9to5Google. This isn’t surprising considering Google officially mentioned that the two new media formats are supported on Instagram with the March Feature Drop.
Photos taken in Ultra HDR mode on your Pixel will now retain their vibrant colors and dynamic range when shared on Threads. But that’s not all. 10-bit HDR videos captured on your Pixel gain an incredible boost in color depth and smooth transitions between light and dark scenes when viewed on Threads.
To take full advantage of this upgrade, you’ll need a compatible Pixel phone:
- Pixel 7
- Pixel 7 Pro
- Pixel Fold
- Pixel 8
- Pixel 8 Pro
Remember, older Pixel models won’t display the enhanced content due to display limitations.
How to enable Ultra HDR and 10-Bit HDR
These features aren’t on by default, so here’s how to activate them in your Google Camera app:
- Open Settings.
- Tap More Settings, then Advanced.
- Enable Ultra HDR.
- Go back to Settings and toggle on 10-Bit HDR
Important note: Shooting 10-bit HDR video on Pixel phones limits your recording to 30fps at 1080p and 4K UHD resolutions.
With social media platforms adding support for newer media formats, users will likely have a better viewing experience. As someone who uses X (formerly Twitter), as much as, if not more than Instagram, I hope Musk gets his folks to consider adding the same support in the near future.
